Armando’s
Martinez – a microphone is a terrible thing to waste
“Save
Our Stages”
Shut
in The USA
(updated 17 May 2020)
by
Jamie Jobb
In
pandemic times of silent stages, one group has emerged from the
chaos: The National Independent Venue Association and its “Save
Our Stages” program. Clearly, this is an effort that ups the
stakes for audience assembly in 2020. Here’s NIVA’s thesis:
“These
entertainment hubs are critical to their local economies and tax
bases as employers, tourism destinations, and revenue generators for
neighboring businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and retail.
Independent venues exist in every state across the country; they were
the first to be closed, they will be the last to open. The economic
recovery process will extend past just reopening the front doors,
requiring solutions unique to the industry.”
With
that effort in mind, I’ve decided to publish this perpetual
work-in-progress and very incomplete list I’ve assembled over the
years of small music houses across the USA which were kindredly
spirited to the coffeehouses
of my youth. With Covid-19 shuttering public gatherings, it’s
unclear how many of these venues will survive any reopening. Topping
the list is Armando’s, our neighborhood music hall which closed
for
good in February 2020 – about a month before general
shelter-in-place orders were locally announced.
Anyone
with other clubs to list here should add (or subtract) them in the
comments and I’ll include any of those on future updates, once
doors can reopen and houses can begin to refill themselves. As this
began as a local project, the list begins in and around San
Francisco.

Joshua "Righteous Raoul" Brody, who has probably played every Bay Area music venue listed here, sent this note with several important updates:
ReplyDeleteThe link for Subterranean Arthouse on Bancroft now goes to
a page for Toko Buku Islam Online, probably a terrorist hub.
That’s not the same Art House Gallery & Cultural Center that
was on Shattuck, is it? Adorable hippie quonset hut, featuring
a roster of mostly 60s holdovers. I played there with deadhead
David Gans and again with ex-Hot Lick Maryann Price.
I would also add the Berkeley Arts Festival, which had a storefront
on University between Shattuck and the campus, and hosted a lot
of commercially-unviable artists from the East Bay improv scene,
including Orchestra Nostalgico, Phillip Greenlief, and ahem me.
Long-departed LongBranch Saloon on San Pablo hosted East
Bay regulars like Little Roger & the Goosebumps, Rubinoos,
Earthquake, etc., and an at-the-time incredibly rare performance
by the Residents.
Rather Ripped Records (whose anniversary was celebrated by
that Residents show) also hosted in-store performances — I saw
Patti Smith there.
Over on this side of the Bay, allow me to venuedrop the following:
United State Cafe (whose owners bifurcated, with one sect moving
a few blocks south to open the Other Cafe)
Shady Grove
The Stone (part of Freddie Herrera’s Keystone empire)
Miss Keiko’s Chi Chi Nightclub — see http://www.gildedserpent.com/articles5/northbeach/places.htm
Intersection for the Arts — started on Union Street a block from
Washington Square, then a storefront on Columbus near the
Transamerica Pyramid, then the black box that is now StageWerx
on Valencia, then the former mortuary that became New College
and is now a bunch of yuppie fuckwad shoppes, and ended up a
shadow of its former producing self, now just a (still very valuable)
arts administration organization in a building owned by the Chronicle.
A lot of the comedians who played the Intersection also played the
Mustard Seed Coffeehouse, but I never went there.
There was a place on the corner of Market and Laguna, Green
something I think. The Pointless Sisters, Duck’s Breath, Rebecca
all played there. It then became an ice cream parlor and is now
the Orbit Room
The Holy City Zoo was another comedy mecca, across the street
from Jack Anderson’s Open Theatre, where the Pointless Sisters
headlined a vaudeville show with a young up and coming comic
named Robin Williams as our opening act. He would bartend at
the Zoo, come over to do a short set, then go back to work.
The Boarding House — originally on Bush Street, then in the
upper Columbus space that also housed the 7th Note, the Old
Waldorf, Wolfgang’s, and something else before all that — the
Orphanage, maybe?
Down in the Peninsula I remember Chuck’s Cellar especially because
Mark Wheaton, the manager, was the only guy in show business who
ever said the magic words “We’re not paying you enough. We’re going
to give you a raise.”
Keep on with your noble work, good friend!

This note from Gerry Griffin at our local magic night club, which was not included on the music hall list. So yes, this list is longer when it includes other kinds of clubs.
ReplyDeleteHey Jamie, My last shows were March 13/14 and it’s a tough row to hoe being shutdown for me too. We’re all losing a lot with the shutdown. Some won’t ever open again. Very sad All best thoughts to you, Gerry Griffin - California Magic Club
Although California Roots Music of Monterey plans a face-to-face October festival, the group also plans a virtual festival on May 22-24. Attend here:
